When its Sunday morning in Ojai, you go to the Farmer's market. Its the thang to do and you know its so because you see all the locals there. Now, the "smart" ones amongst you must be wondering .. how do you identify the locals? Its quite easy. They have the "Ojai" look; a certified style established by Vamshi and Anoo this morning. The Ojaian wears jeans, a worn down white t-shirt with an overly warm jacket thrown over the faded t-shirt. Then there's the hair. I think its a style, really! How else can a whole group of people pull it off? They all look like they just got out of bed -- men and women, all seem to carry that look; especially on a Sunday. But the real give away is the pair of gloves, most often wool, sometimes leather though that would be too unsustainable for the ecoconsciousness of these citizens; are worn even when its 65F. We got quite a laugh out of the gloves this morning but we know the joke is going to turn on us very soon. I know so because I dorned a wool hat this afternoon and it was 65F even then!
While at the Farmer's market; which, I must add was absolutely great -- great variety, friendly, highly casual crowd, good produce, excellent tamales -- I came across Methi. I have never seen Methi in the United States outside of an Asian store. And there she was, bright, crisp and smelling so good. If by this point you haven't figured out what Methi is, clearly you are not an Ojaian and you are not Indian (okay smarty, I guess you could have seen the picture). Methi is fenugreek, a green small-leaf vegetable. It makes an excellent curry and is commonly served in a dish called Aloo Methi -- Potato and Methi.
Now you know what we are eating for dinner in the coming days.
